Norway has announced new regulations concerning the use of phototype by influencers. The new law requires inflammatory and advertisers to clarify whether images have been phototyped or have filters.
The new law comes a long time after youth groups and the Norwegian Ministry of Children and Family Affairs have called for stricter measures on growing concerns about body image and mental health. In assessing the current situation, the department expressed
Concern about a culture that was creating <x0 social security>” contributing to low self-esteem.
The law that will soon be introduced will require sponsored advertising and posts where “form, size or skin of a body has been changed by phototype or other manipulation” to clearly declare that it has been edited. Disrespect will be fined.
The preliminary research presented by the Ministry of Children and Family Affairs claimed that more than half of the 10th grade girls at Oslo School were struggling with mental health and that anorexia was the third most common cause of death in young girls.
Young people are exposed to massive pressure to look good, in addition to other, through social advertising and media, even models that often appear digitally. This exposes young people to an ideal of beauty that is impossible to achieve”, the department said in its proposal.
