Those who wake up early in the morning can be happier and more protected from depression.
Researchers from Exeter University looked at 351 genetic variants to identify exactly the people who rose naturally early in the morning.
Part of the study were 451,025 people between 40 and 60 years of age from the Biobank database in Great Britain.
People with early genetic profiles had 8 percent less likely to suffer from depression and 5 percent more likely to have high levels of well - being compared with those who stay up late because their sleep periods were very similar during weekdays and weekends.
Jessica O'Loughlin, the leading author of the study published in Molecular Psychiatry magazine, said that the findings were powerful evidence that people who wake up naturally in the morning are more protected from depression and more prone to high levels of well - being than those who sleep late.
We think this can be explained by the fact that society's demands mean that night Turks are more likely to challenge their natural hours of body by having to wake up early for work”, she said.
