But why are people who wake up earlier said to be happier than those who spend whole hours in bed, writes The Guardian.
Jessica O'Loughlin, the leading author of a study published in Molecular Psychiatry magazine, asked more than 450 thousand middle - aged people about their preference to wake up from sleep.
“Those who woke up earlier show they have lower levels of depression and anxiety”, the study says.
The author says that this is because those people are inclined not to deviate from their natural sleep patterns by sleeping early and up early.
Meanwhile, those who stay up late tend to feel more tired tomorrow.
The University of Exeter discovered 351 genetic variants that determined the time to wake up.
Those people who usually woke up early were 8 percent less depressed than others and were also happier.
