The US has lifted sanctions on the executives by Vladimir Putin's allies leading the firm behind the Nord Stream 2.

The move came in a report on Russian sanctions given to Congress by the State Department.

Critics have said the pipeline is a major geopolitical award for the Kremlin, the BBC writes, translates Periscopi.

State Department reports that Nord Stream 2 AG and chief executives, Matthias Warnig, a former intelligence official in the East of Germany, have carried out sanctioned actions.

But the State Department concludes that it is in the national interests of America to lift sanctions.

The State Department also imposed sanctions on four Russian ships involved in the construction of Nord Stream 2, which detonators have said is not enough to stop the pipeline.

President Joe Biden has said he opposes the 11 billion-euro project. State Secretary Anthony Blinken said during his confirmation hearing in this position that he “is determined to do anything to prevent completion” of this project.
