Actress Scarlett Johannson has demanded from the film industry of “-submract” by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, as criticism of the film industry's unclear group, which controls the influential prices of Golden Globe, continues to rise for sexism and racism.
In a statement, the star of “Avengers” said “HFPA is an organisation that was legitimised by people like Harvey Weinstein to gather momentum for recognition of the Academy. ”
Johannson said that “as an actress promoting a film”, participation in the organisation's press conferences and price shows “weight has meant facing questions and sexist remarks by some HFPA members that are limited to sexual harassment”.
If there is no essential reform necessary within the organisation, I believe it is time to step back from HFPA,” she added.
The actress's stance comes after Netflix chief Ted Sarando's letter Friday to the organisation, saying the transmission giant will not participate in the globe unless the group vows to reform itself.
This was followed by Amazon studio chief Jennifer Salke, who said in a statement that the Amazon had not been “worked with HFPA since these issues were raised for the first time, and like the rest of the industry, are awaiting a sincere and important solution before going before”.
A day earlier, about 75 of the HFPA 86 members voted for a proposal of inclusion and regulation submitted by the group's board. In February, it was found that the group had no near-American members. In March, the former HFPA president was found to refer to Black Livings Matter as a “racist hate movement” and its cofounder Patrisse Cullers as a self-advanced self-trained”.
In his letter, Sarandos said he hoped the organisation “would accept the issues facing HFPA”, but did not believe these proposed new policies would “handle the systematic diversity and challenges of involvement of HFPA”.
As a result, he said, Netflix was “banning any activity with your organization until meaningful changes are made”.
Netflix carries considerable weight at Golden Globes, with 42 nominations this year and six victories, including for The Crown, The Queens Gambit and Ma Rainey formerly Black Bottom.
In particular, nearly 100 press representatives from the film industry said they would continue to refrain from any HFPA-sponsored event, including press conferences, until these issues are lit in detail”.
HFPA has acted for years as the predecessor of Academy Awards, and in some ways has been used to promote industry and politicisation for later ceremony. But the newspaper “Los Angeles Times” earlier this year it portrayed HFPA as a proxy-sensitent fund for reporters and critics of the semi-retired film industry, with foreign and often dark credentials.
