New research shows that processed meat can negatively affect your cardiovascular system over time.
According to a new study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, just a few processed meats per week can cause an increase in the risk of heart disease.
The study was conducted over ten years and analysed the diets of over 134,000 participants from 21 countries. Researchers specifically observed the cardiovascular health of those subjects and their taking of meat.
Considering all that data, what they discovered was that people who consumed only 140 grams of processed meat every week increased their risk of heart disease by 46 percent. Moreover, the higher consumption of processed meat was also linked to the increased risk of death in general by 51 percent.
Scientists also found that raw meat forms, such as birds, beef, and pork, had a neutral effect on human health. This does not mean that you can eat them in excess, however; this simply means that the same drastic effects on health as refined meat have not been observed.
The authors of the study believe that a great reason for all of the straining of processed meat in the heart lies in the amount of salt contained in these foods, in addition to the many foods added to them in order to increase their conservation schedule. In particular, excessive long - term sodium has been linked to heart disease, weight gain, and other health complications over time.
