An unusual disease is on the rise in the United States, especially in countries that have legalized marijuana
Cannabis ' common users, including teenagers, are appearing in emergency rooms complaining of severe intestines.
“They're complaining about stomach pain, they're very mixed, and they're constantly holding a belly with a hand”, says Dr. Sam Wang, the doctor who is treating teenagers with this kind of problem, writes CNN.
They puke and then they keep throwing up even more. This goes on for hours”, He adds.
Sam says This is a case of cannabis hyperemetic syndrome or CHS”.
A Strange Situation
The cannabis hyperemetic syndrome erupted on the medical scene in 2004, when a group of scholars passed 19 chronic users of marijuana with the same symptoms. Researchers followed nine of the patients over time and found that the symptoms were removed when the cannabis was banned but returned when it was resumed.
What is even more surprising is that all these patients have been treated first with a hot shower without any suggestion from doctors.
Why a hot bath? This is not entirely clear. The tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the main ingredient in marijuana, has access to body pain receptors, so one theory is that the attractive feeling of extreme heat breaks down the pain cycle, thus easing symptoms. In this context, the body of patients has requested a hot shower.
THCs and other canabinoids in the marijuana plant have been used to alleviate the pain by removing, paradoxically, exactly the vomiting and headaches of cancer patients who undergo chemotherapy.
Despite the popularity of marijuana as a pain reliever, the results of the study on its effectiveness have been mixed. Why, though, would the same ingredient relieve and also cause pain? A host of possibilities: Dosage levels.
Another mystery: Not all marijuana users or other similar substances have been affected by CHS. It is not clear who is predisposed to be affected by this disorder, Annabel quotes.
Other unanswered questions: Is there a specific length? Is the product a more specific type? For these and many others, doctors still do not have answers.
