Eating a single hot dog can take you 36 minutes of life, according to a study of health experts at Michigan University.
In the study published in Nature Food magazine, researchers examined 5,853 foods and measured their effects in minutes of healthy life - acquired or lost.
“We wanted to make a health assessment based on the beneficial and harmful effects of food on the entire diet,” CNN Olivier Jolliet, professor of environmental health sciences at the university and author of the study.
They used The Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) a comprehensive regional and global research programme of diseases that assess mortality and disability from major diseases, injuries and risk factors. GBD is a co-operation of over 3,600 researchers from 145 countries and is funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
For example, you lose 0.45 minutes for gram processed meat, or 0.1 minutes are won for gram fruit. We then look at the composition of each food and then we multiply this number with the corresponding food profiles we've developed before,” said Jolliet.
One of the foods measured by researchers was a hot dog. The amount of processed meat resulted in the loss of 27 minutes of healthy life, Jolliet said, but the final value is 36 minutes due to other components such as sodium and fatty acids.
Consumption of foods such as nuts, legumes, marine foods, fruits, and vegetables, on the other hand, have positive effects on health.
The question is not spending time doing math, Jolliet added.
