It is thought that the full moon of January became known as the “Wolf's Moon” because wolves shouted much more during that time.
Traditionally, wolves were believed to be screaming because of hunger during winter, but more is known today than that.

The roars and other voices of the wolf are usually used to determine territory, locate herd members, strengthen social ties, and coordinate hunting.
