Throughout these years, the theory that 10,000 steps a day lead to weight loss has gained great popularity, but according to recent studies these thousands of steps cannot prevent weight gain or loss, writes Chelsea Ritschel for” The Independent”.
To find out if thousands of steps actually made a difference in weight, researchers from the Brigham Young University Sports Department collaborated with colleagues from the Department of Food Sciences and Dietology, with which they conducted a study with college students.
As part of the study, they analyzed 120 students during the first six months of college. Students took part in a step count experiment by taking 10, 12 or 150,000 steps a day, six days a week for 24 of them.
In addition to the steps, researchers also traced the intake of calories and weight of students, follows Atish.
According to their conclusions, published in” Journal of Obity”, the number of steps did not prevent students from gaining weight, even among those who took 150,000 steps a day.
The lack of weight loss was amazing, since physical activity grew progressively”, researchers write.
From the findings, chief author Bruce Bailey, professor of BYU exercise science, concluded that “exercise alone is not always the most effective way to lose weight”.
If you are walking, there may be a benefit in increasing physical activity, but our study showed that this does not translate into weight maintenance or prevention of the increase of”, he added.
However, researchers noted that walking implies an overall positive effect on physical activity and other emotional and health benefits.
The greatest benefit of walking is getting people out of a passive lifestyle. While it will not prevent weight gain in itself, more steps are always better for you”, the scholar adds.
