The father of Turkish football legend Hakan Sukur has been sentenced to three years and six months in prison.
The decision was issued today by the Sakarya court, a few years after his son left President Erdogan's party, where he was an MP leaving for the US after the prosecution of Turkish thinker Fethkullar Gylen.
Sukur was one of the important figures Erdogan had asked him to run for his party.
After rejecting Erdogan's request several times, saying he was a footballer and not a politician, Sukur agreed to run to Istanbul by winning maximum votes.
Sukur left Erdogan's party after rejecting the persecution of Glenen's followers by Erdogan's government. After Sukur left for the US, Turkish police arrested his father on charges of supporting the gylenists, eventually serving a penalty of 3.5 years in prison.
His arrest was widely seen as a revenge against his son Hakan Sukur. A similar fate has been experienced by the parents of NBA star Enes Canter, who also lives in the US and opposes Erdogan's government.
