In some provinces, residents caught in public places without a mask are said to have been closed for several minutes in coffins used to transport victims of the COVID-19 virus.
Businessmen at the Probolingo city market on the northern coast of eastern Java have served such a sentence, and some have been temporarily banned from working.
This is not the only unusual way to punish for not wearing masks: Some were forced to clean the market and the sewage there.
