Worldwide, at least 7,000 health workers have died of the new coronary, says Amnesty International.
The organisation says that those who struggle with pandemics on front lines need adequate access to protective equipment.
“Every health worker has the right to be safe at work and it is a scandal that so much are paying this price “, said Steve Cookburn, chief of economic and social justice in London-based rights group.
“Many months in the pandemic, health workers are still dying horriblely in countries such as Mexico, Brazil and the US, while the rapid spread of infections in South Africa and India shows the need for all states to take action”, he said.
At least 1,320 health workers have died of coronarys in Mexico, more than any other country in the world.
Amnesty International also recorded high numbers of deaths among health workers in other countries, including the United States at 1,007 deaths; UK with 649; Brazil with 634; Russia with 631; India with 573; South Africa with 240; and Iran with 164.
The United States, Brazil, and India have recorded the highest death rates and cases of coronary infection.
“More than seven thousand people die while trying to save others, it's a crisis on a shocking scale”, said Cookburn.
The human rights organisation said there must be global co-operation to ensure that all health workers, including cleaners in health facilities, have adequate protective equipment.
