Many people have poor habits, starting with children, teenagers, and sometimes adults. These are unconscious movements of the body, such as passing hair between hands. Some 1 person in 20 experiences this type of conduct, at least for a certain period of life.

Another custom is to eat nails, almost 30% of the world's population make the move. This is a bad habit, often making your fingers ugly to see, and in the most extreme case, it causes bloodshed.

Why do people do this?

For most people this is a nervous behavior, an anxiety symptom or an obsession-compulsive disorder. In reality, there is something else behind this gesture.

In a study by psychiatrist Kieron O'Connor of Montreal University, Canada, researchers studied factors related to recurring behavior. In this way they point out that those who eat their nails have a distinct personality trait - they are perfectionist.

Researchers on this experiment divided the subjects into two groups, those who had this custom, and those who did not. The participants then underwent four different situations: stress (revision of an air accident), relaxation (seawave project), frustration (they remained in only one room) and frustration (they gave them a very difficult problem to solve, saying it was especially simple).

After observing the reactions of the subjects involved, researchers concluded that those who had repeated behavior do not eat their fingernails when softened but only in other situations. So it is a custom that comes into situations of frustration or frustration when it does not feel productive. Crushing nails is not just an answer to anxiety or stress, but a mechanism to deal with situations in which perfectionists cannot do their best.

According to this study, those who have repeated behavior tend to be perfectionists in the organization - prone to disappointment and impatient - easily lose hope when hard goals fail. Usually they're people who plan everything in detail and get bored if there's no productivity.

OʹConnor believes that thanks to this discovery, it will be easier to deal with such behavior by focusing on changing the perfectionist's attitude rather than just trying to stop these habits, something that has not been very productive so far.

Now that you know the causes, you may see the habit differently. And there's nothing wrong with wanting everything to be well organized. But if you tend to bleed your fingers, it's better to talk to your doctor.
