In one study, experts concluded that the use of marijuana during pregnancy can increase the risk of a child's autism.
“Grattes using cannabis during pregnancy had 1.5 times as much chance of bearing a child with autism” - said study author Dr. Darine El-Chaar, mother's fetal medicine specialist and clinical investigator at the Hospital Research Institute in Ottawa, Canada.
Past studies have shown that the use of marijuana during pregnancy is linked to the child's low weight, impulsiveness, hyperactivity, and other matters related to baby behavior.
The study also found that pregnant women using marijuana have a 2.3 times greater risk of giving birth to their child.
“Based on this, I am not surprised by these findings”- said El-Chaar.
The study, published Monday in Nature magazine, examined the data of every kind of birth in Ontario, Canada, during 2007 and 2012, long before marijuana was legalized in Canada.
The study did not grasp the amount and type of marijuana women had used during pregnancy. Experts also did not know how often women used it.
