Kim has announced in July that the possession of a domestic animal is against the law and that keeping a dog at home is “thedenity of the bourgeois ideology”.
“Autorities are identifying houses that have been dehydrated and are forcing to hand over, or forcibly confiscat to kill”, said a source for the South Korean Chosun Ilbo network.
Some of the dogs are sent to state zoos, and others are sold to dog meat restaurants.
Dog meat is considered delicate on the Korean peninsula even though tradition is disappearing in South Korea, even though it is estimated that some 1 million dogs grow on farms for food. It is preferred in the hot summer season and is believed to give strength, and it is served with spicy soup or boiled in vegetable dishes.
According to the UN, 60 percent of North Korea's 25.5 million population face food shortages as a result of sanctions due to the country's missile programme.
