Brenton Tarrant is charged with 51 murders, 40 attempted murders and committing a terrorist act.
Australian Tarrant will be sentenced after being allowed to enter court.
The court will be able to decide for life in prison, based on the work done and laws in New Zealand, Reuters reports.
The attack was the deadliest in New Zealand ever, and it had immediately promoted a change of law that banned the use of semiautomatic weapons with the aim of not repeating such attacks.
51 people were killed during the attack, which was broadcast live on Facebook on March 15, 2019.
