Syrian President Bashar al-Assad dismissed Prime Minister Imad Khamis on Thursday, state media said.
This decision comes a week after deepening economic woes and a rare explosion of anti-Assad protests in areas held by the government, Klan Kosova reports.
State media gave no reason for this unexpected decision, announced in a presidential decree that appointed water resources Minister Hussein Arnius as Khamis' successor.
Syria has been under attack by an economic crisis and depreciated currency that marked a decline in recent days. This made life difficult for ordinary citizens tired of war over the years.
The country's currency reached a record 3,000 pounds of Syrians at the beginning of this week in a rapid decline.
Syrian authorities blame Western sanctions for widespread difficulties among ordinary residents, where the currency drop has led to rising prices and people trying to cope with basic food and supplies.
