Men's blood has higher levels of a key enzyme used by coronary to infect cells, according to a new European study.
The highest presence of angiotensine 2 (ACE2) converting enzymes found in the heart, kidney, and tissues that wrap blood vessels can explain why more men are likely to die from COVID-19.
ACE2 is a receptor on the surface of cells that connects to the coronary and allows it to enter and infect cells.
While men and women are just as likely to catch the coronavirus, men are more likely to suffer serious effects of the disease, in part because of their higher ACE2 levels, according to researchers.
“ACE2 connects to the coronary and allows it to enter and infect healthy cells after being modified by another protein on the cell's surface, called T MPSS2”, Dr Adria Voors said at the Groningen University Medical Centre in the Netherlands.
ACE2's high-level “Nivele is present in the lungs and is therefore thought to play a crucial role in the progress of lung disorders associated with COVID-19. ”
