Local media have published the first video of an Iranian ship that was accidentally destroyed during military training near the Strait of Hormuz. The fatal incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, where two Iranian ships misfired during a military maneuver, leaving 19 people dead and injured 15 others.
The short video released by Iranian media shows a heavily damaged ship with huge clouds of smoke coming out of its surface.
The incident occurred in Oman Bay during testing a new anti-ship system. It is learned that the event took place during a military maneuver.
Iranian Armed Forces regularly develop maneuvers at this strategic crossing. The Konarak support unit was shot by rockets from Sunday afternoon during a” military maneuver, state television reported.
“Alija was shot after going too close to target and due to disrespect of distance,” is further said in a communique.
The incident comes to a region and at a very tense time between Tehran and Washington.
Tensions resumed when US President Donald Trump withdrew unilaterally in 2018 from the historic agreement between Iran and world powers and imposed sanctions on Iran.
