Men with lower testosterone levels contracting COVID-19 have the greatest risk of dying from the virus, a study has found.
According to the German study, men are twice as likely to die of Coronavirus, but experts have failed to find the reason.
Researchers in a German hospital included 45 patients with the COVIDD-19 in intensive care and found that male sex hormone testosterone can play a major role.
Hormone is known to help regulate the body's immune response, but when a person has low levels of testosterone, the immune system is not controlled and prone to infection.
The immune system begins to damage itself, and if left uncontrolled, it can be fatal.
Of 45 patients in intensive care 35 men and 10 women, 9 men and 3 women died.
The testosterone is essential in the way the body initiates and regulates various immune responses, including combating viral infections. It plays a special role in male immunity as the principal male sex hormone.
The study found that more than 68.6 percent of male patients had low testosterone levels
