These are experts' advice:

1. Wash your mask every day.

“Maska must be washed after any use,” says Purvi Parikh, M.D., an alergologist and immunologist and member of the Doctors for Patients' Protection. For example, if you want to go to a grocery store, you need to bathe when you get home and before you go out next time”.

The ideal is to put the mask in the washing machine whenever you use it, says Deirdre Jones, the designer behind Randall Co., who will launch a clothing mask line on April 13th.

2. Use hot water.

When you wash a mask for your face, you have to make sure you're killing every microbe, so temperature matters. “Use a warm environment to remove bacteria and viruses without weakening the fabric,” says Jones. Your regular laundry cleaner is good. “Using these practices will keep your mask clean and also quite soft by ensuring that it will remain in excellent condition for longer,” says Jones.

3. Be careful how you say it.

If your mask has flexible buds, you have to let it dry itself so it doesn't get damaged. If you have cloth masks, you can dry it in a regular dryer cycle,”- says Parikh.

4. Hand it over if you have to.

If you don't have a washing machine, you can wash it in the sink. You can handwash a mask that's of cloth. You can even use soap for this. First wet your mask and rub it hard with soap so you have a skin, Jones says. Parik then recommends the wearing of the mask in hot water and soap for 30 minutes to make sure you killed all the germs. Then wash it away and dry it on a disinfected surface, Jones says.

5. Consider buying a spare mask.

Ideally, you should wash your mask whenever you wear it, Jones says. So it may be helpful to have one or two more backups, which you can use in rotation.

6. How to Wash a Paper mask

These masks are not meant to wear a few times. They're too hard to disinfect.

“If you have a limited supply, we recommend you put the mask in a safe, isolated place, such as a paper bag, for three to five days and then reuse it. ”
