It can be a pleasure to work in various ways from what you are perhaps taught, and it can indeed strengthen your body and endurance.

Be Realistic
Lower your brief expectations if you are untrained, forget to conduct a marathon that should not be your focus for now (unless you are very experienced and have been running for months). Remember, it may take years for your body to learn to run. Listen to your body signals. Pain is a bad sign and be patient. Of course, it is recommended that you take a vacation if you feel a resulting injury.
Program before
Including running as a fixed component of your training plan so that you have planned your run on certain days. This should mean running, even in days when you are not really motivated.
