Would you like to live 7-10 years healthy, with no disease?
Try to eliminate these five poor health habits: smoking, not exercise, overweight, heavy drinking, and eating an unhealthy diet.
This is said by a new study that has examined the impact of such behaviors on living a longer life without diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other chronic diseases.
“We found that a healthy lifestyle can prevent a person from being affected by any disease”, said the elderly author, Dr Frank Hu, who heads the food department at Harvard T.H. Chan Public Health School.
In particular, women who practiced all five customs earned over 10 years of life without disease, and men who did so earned almost eight years,” He said Hu.
Additional data
Research is an extension of a study published last year that followed more than 38,000 men for 28 years and 73,000 women for 34 years.
This research found that women who adopted all five healthy habits at the age of 50 lived 14 years longer than women who did not follow these rules; men who followed all five life factors at the age of 50 lived 12 years longer than men who did not follow any.
This new study, published on Wednesday in BMJ magazine, examined the same data to see how chronic illness affected the quality of life during the study period.
The research was designed to see how five healthy behaviors interacted to influence the risk of illness: nonsmoking, maintaining a healthy BMI under 25 years of age, doing at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day, moderate drinking, and eating a good quality diet.
Women who practiced four or five of the healthy habits over the next 20-30 years, Hu said, had an additional 10.6 years without disease compared with women who adopted no changes in life style. On average, healthy women earned eight years without cancer, 10 years without cardiovascular disease, and 12 years without diabetes.
Men who practiced four to five healthy behaviors earned the longest life span of 7.6 years; on average, six more years without cancer, almost nine more years without heart issues, and over 10 years without diabetes.
What happened if a person was diagnosed with a disease during the study? The data showed that half of the people diagnosed with cancer lived an additional 23 years if they adopted four of five healthy practices. Among those who did not change, half survived only 11 extra years. The same models were seen for both heart disease and diabetes.
“This is a positive health message because it means that life health habits not only extend life but also improves the quality of life and reduces suffering about chronic illness”, He said Hu.
The study had certain restrictions, including that access data on five lifestyle factors was self-reported, making it a significant result of measurement errors.
What if you have not eliminated these five bad habits from your life?
“Never too late to adopt these customs,” He said Hu. For smokers, the only important thing to do is stop smoking. For non-smoking smokers, eating a healthy diet and being physically active are important to maintaining a healthy load. ”
