As disturbing as it may seem, a new study has found that Viagra, the remedy for correct malfunction, can cure blindness.
According to a report from Columbia University in New York, Viagra reportedly has potential “to prevent further loss of sight for patients” and that it can even repair the damage already done. The report is based on study conducted by scientists at Columbia University for two years. The study suggested that the drug slows down muscle degeneration linked to the age (AMD).
Five elderly patients who participated in the experiment had AMD and were given medicine for two years. The dosage was a pill a day. Ophthalmologistica published the results of the study and showed that the drug improved the vision for one participant and prevented the deterioration of others completely.
The AMD is said to be one of the main causes of blindness in the world. AMD has two species, wet and dry. The wet type is said to act quickly, causing loss of sight in just under 90 days.
The dryer, said to be the most common, with about 90 per cent of the cases involving it, can last many years and usually affect people aged 50 and older. The situation occurs when fresh blood vessels grow above the back of the eye called macula. The Makula helps us determine the details of what we see and it's a small pigmented area that's part of the retina.
The study suggests that Viagra can improve the circulation of blood in this tissue and offers considerable opportunities for visual preservation and recovery. Patients remained visually stable and had an obvious improvement in the vision.
Professor Sobha Sivaprasad of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists said that although the study results are very promising, she still felt that the ladder is too small.
We now need more studies to repeat these findings before Viagra is used as a treatment,” She said.
