The finance director at the island's Industrial Development Company, Reuben Rivera, said a police complaint was addressed during yesterday's day the agency had sent the money to a fraudulent account.
Rivera said the government agency transferred the money on January 17th first received an e-mail claiming a change of bank accounts related to remittances, according to the statement by police, writes the NBC, translates Periscope.
Manuel Laboy, executive director of the agency, told the Associated Press that officials had discovered the incident earlier this week and had immediately reported the case to the FBI.
This is a serious, extremely serious situation, he said. “We want it investigated until the last consequences. ”
The agency in question did not reveal how this fraud had fallen prey to or if it had fired people who might have been involved.
But it was said, however, that an internal investigation was under way to determine whether someone in the agency was negligent or if he had not carefully followed standard procedures.
