Boris Johnson announced a series of new restrictions on December 19th, including the tightening of Christmas restrictions.
The new version was first identified in Kent last week during routine surveillance by Public Health England. Now over 60 local authorities in England have reported cases of coronavirus version.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock told MPs last week that the number of cases involving the new version is “arriving at speed”.
The new version is spreading rapidly across the entire southeast of England, London, Kent, and other parts of the southeast will be placed on a new level 4 quarantine that began on December 20th.
Is the newest kind more dangerous, and what are the symptoms?
No. The new type is not supposed to cause worse or different symptoms of coronavirus compared with the virus we've known for the last 10 months.
Symptoms have not changed a constant cough, chest pain, and loss of taste and smell are the main symptoms of coronavirus. There have been many mutations in the virus since it emerged in 2019. This is expected in viruses and it's common: SARS-CoV-2 is an ARN virus and these viruses change.
However, Boris Johnson said that the new type is estimated to be 70 per cent more infectious than the previous incarnations of the virus.
