Santos comes out with official communiqué saying Messi didn't break Pele's record for goals with a club

There's a lot of contradiction about how many goals Pele has scored for Santos.

He's been credited with 643 goals for the Brazilian club, but Pele has suggested he scored over 1,000, broadcast Periscope.

And now, Santos has published a communique saying his total is above four figures.

” According to some statistics, Lionel Messi became the most goal player for a club, reaching the number of 644 goals for Barcelona, excluding friendly matches labeled by some as official goals,” is written in the communique.

”Pele scored 1,031 goals for Santos. According to the specialised press, the football king scored 643 goals, but 448 goals scored in friendly competitions were not included, as if they have less value than others. ”
