Coca-Cola is named for the second consecutive year, the brand that creates more pollution according to a global audit

Coca-Cola For the second consecutive year, it has been described as the brand that creates more pollution in the environment in a global audit conducted by the global Break Free From Plastic movement. The giant gas beverage company was responsible for more plastic waste than the other three major pollutants combined together.

More than 72,000 volunteers flocked to beaches, along waterways and near their offices and houses, collecting plastic bottles, cups, wrappings, bags and other chips in September as a goal of auditing. They found that plastic represented 50 different species and could be traced to almost 8,000 marks. Koke was responsible for 11,732 pieces of plastic waste found in 37 locations on four continents. After Coca-Cola, the other biggest contributors to plastic pollution in auditing were Nestle, PepsiCo, Montreal International, etc. More than half of the plastic was eroded to the point that it was impossible to discern who had produced it.

Cooke was the main source of plastic in Africa and Europe and the second largest source in Asia and South America. In North America, the company responsible for most of the plastic found was Nestle, followed by the company Solo Cup, owned by the Dart Container and Starbucks. Coca-Cola ranked fifth among companies responsible for plastic waste in North America.

Coca-Cola answered questions about the brand auditing with an email statement: Whenever our package ends up in our oceans, or wherever it doesn't, it's unacceptable to us. In partnership with others, we are working to address this critical global issue, both to help avoid the use of plastic waste to enter our oceans as well as help clean up existing material”.

Koke's statement also said, “We are investing in every market to increase the recovery of our bottles and cans, and we have recently announced the launch in Vietnam of an organization supported by the packages recycling industry, as well as an $19m investment in the Philippines in a new food package recycling facility. We are also investing to accelerate major innovations that will help reduce waste, including new improved recycling technologies that allow us to recycle plastic. PET of poor quality, often destined for burns or storage, again in the material of packaged high quality food”.

The quality of Coca-Cola as the leading global contributor to plastic waste for two years straight goes against the company's carefully treated public image as an environmental leader. Early this month, Koke introduced a plastic bottle of recycled material, and last year the company pledged to collect and recycle “ECt of each bottle or can sell globally”.

Along with the extraordinary traces of waste, the latest evidence undermines the green image of Coca-Cola. Meanwhile, European environmentalists close to lawyers who have conducted global brand auditing say the company has been trying to fight plastic pollution.

Hundreds of cities have recently committed themselves to becoming cities “with waste zero”. “We have created a very detailed masterplane, which looks at the full view of what a municipality needs to reduce their waste,” says Alexander Aubert, founder of Zero Waste Montenegro and member of the Zero Waste Europe board. We look at everything that's been done in a city, but we also see a local level of how things can be used. ”

The “zero waste movement” focuses on a hierarchy that sets down the reduction and conservation of plastic and other materials above recycling and stresses reducing waste in its source.
