Consider the problem of alcohol consumption in pregnancy

Worldly public health authorities have consistently reduced the recommended amount of alcohol for a pregnant woman during the week.

When a female consumes alcohol, she passes through blood and through placenta, to her child. A child's liver is one of the last organs to develop. The liver does not fully measure up to half the pregnancy. The fetal liver cannot process alcohol as the liver of an adult does. Exposing high amounts of alcohol can seriously damage the child's development.

Most health professionals recommend that pregnant mothers avoid alcohol consumption altogether. National Health Services in Britain states that if a pregnant woman chooses to drink alcohol, she should not consume more than two units of alcohol per week or two weeks.

It is recommended that the mother completely avoid drinking during the first quarter of pregnancy. Drinking large amounts of alcohol during pregnancy can harm both mother and child. There is an adult risk for a child to develop what is called Alcohol child syndrome. Such syndrome is characterized by bans on growth, behavioral disorders, and learning problems. There is also a high risk for facial anomalies.
