Christian Obodo has been kidnapped by armed individuals in Warri City, southern Nigeria.
The police are on a path to his rescue, but no contact with the kidnappers has been placed, said the local police spokesman.
Bribery losses from criminal gangs are common in Africa's most populated country, especially in the Delta oil region.
Obodo had been kidnapped earlier in the same region in 2012, and was saved the next day during a police intervention.
His kidnappers then demanded a reward of some $18,000 (U.S.).
The Nigerian National midfielder, the peak career, was in 2005-2012 when he played in Serien A at Peugia, Fiorentina, and Udine. He retired from football in 2017.
