One type of breast implant used by millions of women worldwide is carefully checked after the French doctors ' advice to give up their use of it.
They suspect a possible link between this implant and a rare type of cancer: the lymphoma of large anplastic cells (ALCL), which normally starts with a capsule and pain and swelling in the breast.
Women who remove this capsule and implants themselves can fully recover, but if the disease is left untreated, it can spread throughout the body and become a threat to life.
There is a growing concern about the effect of implants. Figures collected by plastic surgeons indicate there have been at least 615 cases of related diseases and 16 cases of death.
In France, where 85% of breast implants used by women are more rough surface, health regulator “ANSM” has recommended that surgeons switch to soft implants while continuing the investigation into their consequences in the body.
The situation in France is likely to fuel debate over implants in other countries as well.
