The Tunisian citizen, who killed three people at a church in France, has arrived in Europe last month, officials said.
The suspect, 21, owns Italy's Red Cross documents, which were issued after arriving on an immigrant ship on the Italian island of Lampedusa last month.
He was shot by police and in critical condition for life.
The attack occurred Thursday at the Notre-Dame Basilica in the town of Nice. One of the victims was beheaded.
France's president, Emmanuel Macron, named the incident “the Islamist terrorist attack”.
Macron said the number of soldiers who will protect public places, such as churches and schools, will increase from 3,000 to 7,000.
Prosecutors have already launched investigations, while the national security alert has increased to the highest level.
On October 16, another known terrorist attack occurred in a town near Paris. A suspected Islamist has beheaded a history teacher who, in an hour of learning about freedom of speech, has shown cartoons by the Prophet Muhammad.
This murder has raised tensions in France. Protecting the right to publish cartoons on the part of Macroni and government efforts to fight radical Islam have angered Turkey and other predominantly Muslim countries. The French honor the slain teacher
The suspect in Nica's attack was heard screaming “Allah Akbar”, or God is the greatest before being shot by the police.
A Koran, two phones and a 30cm-long knife have been found in the attacker, said France's chief anti-terrorist prosecutor, Jean-Francois Richard.
Some sources in the police identified the attacker as Brahim Aouissaui.
“I repeat with great clarity: We will not give up on anything”, Macron said, after visiting Nice.
Two more attacks against France took place Thursday.
A person was shot dead near the southern town of Avignon after threatening police with a pistol.
Outside the French consulate in Jedah, Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, a guard was attacked. The guard was taken to the hospital, the suspect was arrested.
Who were the victims of the attack on Nice?
The three victims in Nice were attacked inside the Basilica on Thursday morning, before the first Mass of the day.
Two died inside the church -- a 60-year-old woman, who was completely cut off by “his head, and a 55-year-old, which was slit.
Another, 44, managed to escape to a nearby café after being stabbed several times but later died.
Brazil's Foreign Ministry announced that 44-year-old girl was Brazilian, the mother of three children living in France. The ministry did not confirm whether she also had French citizenship.
Vice President Jair Bolsonaro, on behalf of the entire Brazilian nation, expresses his deepest condolences to the family and friends of the slain citizen in Nice as well as other victims, while expressing his solidarity with the people and government of France”, the statement says.
“Tell my children I love”, the 44-year-old woman before her death, reported the French cable channel BFM TV.
Four years ago, Nica has been the scene of one of the worst jihadist attacks in France. A Tunisian has crashed a truck for crowds celebrating Baptist Day on July 14, 2016, killing 86 people.
Governments around the world condemned Thursday's attack, including the European neighbours of France, the US, Turkey, Egypt, Qatar and Lebanon. / REL
