The anxiety is growing in Wuhan as the Chinese city is heading towards a dead end in an attempt to control the spread of the deadly virus, which has left 17 dead so far.
Authorities have suspended exit planes, trains, buses, subways and boats, the BBC writes.
Residents are told not to leave the city, made up of 11 million inhabitants. Expressing fears that they might face food shortages, someone said they are feeling like it's the end of the world.
So far there are more than 500 confirmed cases of the virus, which has already spread abroad.
Officials in Hong Kong announced on Wednesday that the first two cases of coronavirus were reported in the nearby town of Macau.
The ban on Wuhan comes as millions of Chinese people in other parts of China are traveling all over the country for the Festival of the Lunar New Year, Periscope follows.
