Tony Morrison, the first African-American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, has died at 88.
Her family confirmed her death, saying she died of a short illness.
In her family statement it has been said that “mother, grandmother and extremely devoted aunt have passed away last night (5 August) surrounded by family and friends”.
A writer who valued the written word, whether it's her or the students or others, she's read the house willingly and felt the most when she wrote”, said the letter.
And since her death represents a great loss, we're grateful that she's had a long life and lived well”
As author of 11 novels, Morrison has won the 1993 Nobel Prize for Literature, until his first work was published in 1970.
Morrison once said: We die. That could be the reason for life. But we create languages. This could be the measure of our lives.
