If financial rewards are offered to people for quitting tobacco, billions of pounds can be saved annually and the economy increased, according to one study.

This study revealed that people who received financial rewards were 50 percent more likely to stop smoking than those who did not. The value of rewards ranged from 35 to 912 pounds in the form of cash payments.

Smoke costs the British economy 13 billion per year, including costs of 3 billion for health and social care. Researchers say their findings indicate a new potential method for reducing these costs, as well as improving public health, writes The Guardian, translates Periscope.

The findings, published by the Cochrane Library, contained the results of 33 tests from eight different countries, which covered more than 21,000 participants who wanted to quit their cigarettes.

Scientists found that the amount of money offered as a reward made no difference in the prospect of quitting, and that even the smallest rewards increased the likelihood of stopping this dangerous activity. /Periscope
