Shala: Strengthening the Institute of Metrology is important for improving citizens' lives

Trade and Industry Minister Andrew Shala, on World Metrology Day, stressed that consumer protection during this governing mandate has been the main focus of the MTI. According to Shala, further strengthening of Kosovo metrology is very important for measuring the lives of citizens and meeting the pre-MSA criteria [...]
According to Shala, further strengthening of Kosovo metrology is very important for measuring the lives of citizens and fulfilling the first criteria with the SAA and the ERA, and above all, to raise the standard of life of our citizens.
“We have already adopted the new metrology law, and are in the process of drafting sublegal acts in order to implement this EU standards law as best possible. Furthermore, with the help of the World Bank we are rehabilitationing an MTI facility that has so far been unusable, and we believe that during the next year physical and technical conditions will also be created that each legal criterion before will live in what we are calling the National Quality Centre of Kosovo”, Shala said.
Shala has made it known that during the end of last year, and during this year we have started unannounced inspections of measuring the weight of bread, with the main aim of not allowing fraud for our citizens.
Also, over the past year, we started what we're calling Liter-liter, which means calibration of fuel equipment by avoiding any fraud on this issue. Soon, we will also begin controlling low-tensive equipment, gold, power and water watches and also calibration and control of medical equipment, because we will not allow any consumer fraud”, he said.
Minister Shala said that in order for Kosovo to be a successful country in the development and support of businesses, which could be competitive in the domestic and external market, it needs to have an internationally recognised metrology system.
“Under the Stabilisation and Association Agreement, Kosovo will take the necessary measures in order to gradually reach compliance with EU horizontal and sectoral legislation for product security and bring quality infrastructure, such as European standardisation procedures, metrology, accreditation and conformity assessment. Currently, our EU standards laws will be implemented”, Shala said.
