Peru's former president, Alan Garcia, has passed away after shooting himself in the head Wednesday, when police surrounded his house, to arrest him in connection with corruption investigations, the state's Interior Ministry has announced.
Garcia (69) had undergone emergency surgery, but had failed to survive, Peruvian Health Minister Zulem Thomas has announced.
Garcia was one of nine people whose arrest had been requested by a judge Wednesday in connection with investigations into taking bribes from “Oderbrecht<1>, Brazilian construction company, on the verge of the biggest corruption scandal in Latin America, after its officials had publicly admitted to the end of 2016 that they had secured lucrative contracts across the region, bribed the leaders.
