Erdogan, who has dominated Turkish politics since he came to power 16 years ago, and has led this state every time, has been campaigning intensively over the last two months for Sunday's vote, which he has named as “survival issues” for Turkey.
Turkish media have said the Republican People's Party candidate (CHP), Mansur Yavas, has scored clear victories in Ankara, but the result has been so close to Istanbul that both parties have claimed victory.
The defeat for Erdogan's Islamist-based party in Ankara has been an important sign for the president. The loss of Istanbul, the country in which he started his political career and served as chairman in the 1990s, could mean an even greater problem for the support he enjoys.
Although Turkish lira had a slight increase before the elections, its value has fallen again on Monday and has been 1.2 percent compared to the US dollar value of 5.62. State news agency Anadolu has said Erdogan's party will appeal the results in several Ankara districts.
In a speech to his supporters in Ankara, Erdogan has conceded defeat in Istanbul, though he has said most of the neighbourhoods in this town will be led by his party.
