When photograph David McMillan first visited the city of Pripyat in 1994, he did not expect his movement to be restricted. Just eight years earlier, a reactor in the vicinity of Chernobyli had exploded, forcing all residents to evacuate and send radioactive waste across Europe, Periscopi translates.
Pripyat, a city in Ukraine, was part of the Soviet Union at the time of the disaster in April 1986. Built just a decade ago for nuclear plant workers, the city once sheltered 30,000 inhabitants.
The “must have been very nice,” said McMillan. The “was considered, at the time, to be one of the best cities in the Soviet Union”. There were many schools and hospitals, many sports and culture sites. ”
After the people's withdrawal in Pripyat, nature has returned. Picture images show grass and trees that thrive in man - made structures. /Periscopi
