British MPs have warned that even the Westminster Palace is critical of the fire that could be as devastating as the flames that burned the Notre Dame Cathedral, unless a quick action is taken for renovation, writes The Guardian, translates Periscopi.
A multibillion renovation programme is expected to begin in the middle of the new decade.
Firefighters constantly patrol in the neo-gitic building, where fire started 40 times between 2008 and 2012; fires were quickly extinguished by them, but that could change.
The old electric system, and the corridors and mazes of this palace mean that fire can be spread quickly and unannounced, and experts have warned it.
Labour MP Chris Bryant today stated: “Looking at Paris tonight was reminded of the responsibility our generation has for the Westminster Palace, in particular for the Westminster Hall, dating back to the 11th century. ”
Most of Westminster's Palace had been destroyed by fire in 1834 but was later rebuilt by architect Charles Barry, although the 900-year-old Westminster Hall had escaped fire.
