Turkish Defence Minister Hulus Akar, along with a delegation in which the chief of general staff, Yaşar Güler, has arrived for a working visit to Washington to discuss the situation in Syria with their American counterparts and other issues of common interest
The Turkish delegation held a meeting at the Pentagon, where it was hosted by US Defence Secretary Patrick Chanhahan's taskman and American Army Chief of General Staff Joseph Dunford.
During the meeting, Akar declared that Turkey wants to continue with the US, which it called strategic partners, strong relations and friendship.
“We believe that the US decision to withdraw from Syria will be implemented in line with our common interests and in co-ordination and co-operation with Turkey. As two strategic allies and partners, we must work together to fight all forms of terrorism. In this direction we share our commitment to war against terrorist PKK organisations/ YPG/ PKK, DEAR and in particular FETO. We are aiming to preserve security, stability and peace in Syria and, at large,”, Akar said.
Shanahan stressed that co-operation between the two countries in the security field already has a decades-long history.
“Today this relationship we have continues in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and in Kosovo”, he said, to continue seeking solutions to problems in Syria.
We understand the complexity of this issue, but we have smart people working the case in question”, Shanahan said.
Asked by journalists about the duties of American soldiers who will remain in Syria, he replied that the US mission in the fight against The DEA hasn't changed.
“We are in the transition period to ensure stability in the region. We work with our partners to improve the security and local capacity”, Shanahan said.
Meanwhile, in question of the Kurdish people's problem in the region, Akar said Turkey has no problem with Kurds.
We don't have any problems with Kurds in Turkey or abroad, or with other ethnic groups. We fight terrorist organisations, our goal is only terrorists”, Akar said.
