An ancient Assyrian cuneiform tablet scholar has made a frightening discovery of an overlooked drawing of a devil believed to cause epilepleppsis.

The 2,700-year-old clay tablet is inscribed with symbols offering ancient medical treatments and although discovered decades ago in Iraq today, a review of the object revealed the devilish being.

The creature contains horns, tails, and a serpent tongue, and it is the earliest illustration of a demon that can be accompanied by episodes in history.

Troels Pank Arball from Copenhagen University in Denmark studied the text as part of his doctorate and told ScienceNordic: 02/04 gives a unique picture of how an Assyrian doctor was trained in the art of diagnosis and treatment of diseases, and their causes.

The “is a mirror of some of the earliest examples of what we can describe as science,” said at the beginning of this year.

Scientists believe that although magical cures were common at this time, clay tablets use a more traditional approach as well.

Clay tablets were discovered decades ago in the ancient remains of the city Assur in northern Iraq, but new research revealed the writings of an intern doctor from the civilization's pit.

Written in an ancient language invented by Sudanans called cuneiform writing, clay tablets tell the story of a physician in training, Kisir-Assur.

He records his work and methods in ancient writing. Clay tablets speak of a combination of medical practices (possibly delivered to Greeks) and magical rituals.

Epilepsia is a condition that affects the brain and leaves patients in danger of nervous crises. About one in 100 people in Great Britain have epilepsy, while in the United States, 1.2 percent of the population are able, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Anyone can have a nervous breakdown that does not automatically mean that they have seizures. Usually, more than one episode is required in front of a diagnosis. Nerve attacks occur when there is a sudden explosion of electrical activity in the brain, which causes a disruption in its operation.

Some nervous crises keep people alert and conscious of their surroundings, while others cause people to lose consciousness. Some also make patients experience unusual feelings, feelings or movements, or go stiff and fall on the floor.

Epilepsia can be represented at any age by a stroke, brain infection, head injury, or birth problems that lead to a lack of oxygen. But in more than half the time, there is no cure. Antileptic drugs do not heal the situation but help prevent or reduce nerve crises.

If these don't work, brain surgery can be effective. The clay tablet was under Arball's care for the last four years in Berlin, and after a review, he made the terrible discovery.

“We have long known that the Assyrians and the Babylonians considered diseases to be phenomena caused by gods, demons, or magic,” explains Troels Pank Arball.

And the healers were responsible for the expulsion of these supernatural forces and the medical symptoms they cause with medicine, rituals, or magic. But this is the first time we've been able to link one of the very rare illustrations of demons in medical texts with the specific epilepsity of the disease, which the Assyrians and the Babylonians called Bennu. ”

Bennu-leppissia, which is one of the diseases described in the 2700-year text, caused fears in ancient Iraq; symptoms included nerve crises, loss of consciousness and, in some cases, patients shouted like goats.

The text also shows that the demon acted on behalf of the lunar god Sin when a person fell victim to epilepsy, which led the Assyrians and Babylonians to believe that the disease was related to the moon and madness.

In the coming millenniums, this idea spread, also in our part of the world, and it can still be discovered in the English word ʹlunacyʹ, ” says Arball.

In other words, views on disease, diagnosis, and treatment in earlier civilizations have had a significant impact on later perceptions of the disease, even on recent history. ”

Arball also explained that it is rare to see a demon on such medical tables, since they usually contain images that healers used in their rituals, not demons

He found that much of the treatment was for patients with bites or pain attacks.

The doctor certainly did this to find out how the toxins affect the body and determine how poison worked”, Arball said.

Although Kissir-Assur lived hundreds of years before Hippocrates, widely considered the father of modern medicine, he developed similar ideas.

Writing carved on clay tablets is thought to be one of the most detailed confessions of ancient education and medical practice ever recorded.

Kissir-Assus recorded what he learned in chronological order, which allowed scholars to unlock the length of his training.
