During a televised speech Sunday evening, Prime Minister Muscat announced he would stay in the position of the government's chief until a new party leader is appointed, and this is expected to happen in January. He said he deeply regrets the murder of journalist Gallizia and said the country needs a new site.
At the time when all the people of the small Mediterranean state were waiting for the prime minister's speech, thousands gathered on the streets of Valletta, carrying candles, waving the flags of Malta and singing the national anthem in protest of the journalist's murder.
Carwana Gallizia was killed in October 2017 when a bomb mounted under the driver's seat in her car had been detonated from a distance. This journalist had published writings on higher-level corruption in the Montenegrin government.
The retired prime minister said: “On that day I will also resign from the position of party leader”.
His departure brings an end to a seven-year power stance in the smallest state of the European Union, writes the Guardian”, Report Express broadcast.
