The German government” has regretted the US's” decision to allow sanctions against companies or foreign persons involved in the construction of the “Nord Stream 2”, which carries Russian gas under the Baltic Sea to Germany.
The federal government “rejects these types of extraterritorial sanctions”, spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer said today.
“They affect German and European companies, as well as interfere with our internal affairs”, she added.
US President Donald Trump signed a $738 billion defence spending bill yesterday.
This legislation included sanctions on ships committed to the deployment of pipelines for “Nord Stream 2” and “Turkstream”, the latter another Russian gas pipeline that will carry gas to Turkey, or foreign persons assisting these vessels.
The legislation gives President Trump 60 days to impose these measures.
Paying attention to continuing talks between Moscow and Kiev on the transport of Russian gas via Ukraine to Europe, Demmer said such American measures that were created, especially with the protection of Ukraine, were unintelligible.
