The United Nations estimates that a third of all women and girls in the world experience physical or sexual violence during their lifetime.
According to them, half of the women killed worldwide have suffered from partners or family.
The data was released Monday on the International Day of Elimination of Violence on Women.
According to the report, the exact number of rapes and sexual assaults is hard to know because of the frequent fear of victims reporting them.
However, the report points out, some 15 million teenage girls worldwide have had forced sex at some point in their lives.
“Desire against women and girls is one of the most widespread and destructive violations of human rights, but very often not reported due to impunity, shame and gender inequality”, the United Nations points out. / REL/
