On July 26, 1963 Skopje was rocked by a powerful earthquake where 1,080 people lost their lives while 3,000 others were injured.
The quake struck at 5 and 17 minutes, while the slightest quake was between 5 and 43 minutes.
The earthquake destroyed 15,800 buildings and damaged another 28,000. Over 200,000 people were left without a roof over their heads. The Skopje tragedy shocked the whole world. The International Red Cross appealed to all food organisations for Skopje children, writes trumpet. The Lithuanian Union submitted recommendation to all parliaments and governments to help rebuild the city.
humanitarian organisations in many countries were involved in Skopje's collection of aid. So Skopje became a city of international solidarity. Immediately after the disaster, the United Nations became involved in activities that will plan and long - term help the destroyed city. At the time professional teams from the UN began arriving in Skopje, the international organisation's headquarters has said Skopje will be the monument to human solidarity.
On September 23, 1963, 35 countries asked the General Assembly to put in line the day of its session points for the mass enterprise in Skopje. After four days, on September 27th, the General Assembly prioritized international action to assist Skopje. On October 14th, after a two-hour discussion, the UN General Assembly unanimously approved Resolution to provide assistance to the Yugoslav government during Skopje's reconstruction.
