Top Russian officials tried “to capture the moment” as the EU recently refused to open negotiations for northern Macedonia and Albania, urging the latter to join the Euroasian Economic Union.
Law and International Relations Professor at Pristina University “Hasan Pristina”, Enver Hasani, estimates that the concrete effect of this Russian requirement is keeping, as he says, the so-called “The Balkan Schengen country”.
The remaining “integrations the Russian ambassador has proposed are still inconspicuous. In fact, they are not attractive even to the actors themselves who have established them. For this reason, the Serbian initiative took place “The Balkan Schengen Minen”. In these initiatives, not only does Russia get closer to the Balkan countries, but Kosovo and Albanians lose the main leverage of the European Union's influence and integration into”.
While Kosovo security field expert Florian Qehaja says the offer as such of Russia remains an attempt, while the Euroasian Economic Union offers no alternative and does not benefit Balkan countries, even for Serbia as Russian strategic partners. “Russia will continue to infiltrate by providing opportunities for bilateral relations, thus completely challenging the vision of European integrations if only confirmed that this vision cannot be converted into practice”.
