Japanese Emperor Naruhio promised that he would successfully fulfil all his obligations as a state symbol at the centuries-old ceremony held in honour of his throne, which he attended by senior officials and heads of states from more than 180 countries, including Albania's president, Ilir Meta.
59-year-old Naruhito was enthroned in May after his father, Akihito, became the first monarch to give up in 2 centuries.
I swear that I will act according to the Constitution and fulfill all my obligations as a symbol of the state and the unification of people”, said the new emperor before 2000 in attendance, among whom and Britain's Prince Charles.
“I especially hope Japan develops further and contributes to the friendship and peace of the international community and to the welfare and prosperity of human beings through the infinite wisdom and effort”, he added.
To mark this event, the Japanese government forgave more than 500 thousand people who committed minor violations, including disrespecting the rules of communication.
Naruhio's grandfather Hirohito, in whose name Japanese troops fought in World War II, was treated as a god, but gave up his divine status after Japan's defeat in 1945. The current emperor has no political authority.
