Through a Twitter post, American President Donald Trump said Secretary McAleenan wanted to spend more time with his family. He said next week he will appoint the deputy official who resigned.
McAleenan, 48, is the fourth person to have served as head of Homeland Security during President Trump's mandate.
He has monitored and led the president's strict policies for stopping immigrants along the border with Mexico.
However, analysts believe this secretary has not had stable relations with the president and has criticised the tone of the debate over immigrants.
Announcing the secretary's resignation, President Trump said McAleenan has done a great job. Well, I'm sorry. Next week I'll announce the new secretary. Many excellent candidates”, the president wrote.
McAleenan was elected to this position in April this year, following the resignation of Kirsjen Nielsen, who was criticised by the president for not being strict enough to control immigration, writes “BBC”, broadcast Express Journal.
